Vertu Sounds Out Support For Durham County Brass Band Movement
Vertu has strengthened its long‘standing support for traditional brass band music by sponsoring the Durham County Brass Band Association, helping to support contests and events across the North of England.
The partnership will see the North East-based automotive retailer, the fourth largest in the UK, back the programme of competitions being organised by the Association during 2026, including its flagship Festival of Brass, which brings together bands from across the region and beyond.
The Durham County Brass Band Association is an organisation dedicated to promoting and protecting brass band music. It organises a series of contests each year, giving bands of all levels the opportunity to perform, compete and develop, while keeping a centuries‘old tradition alive.
Among the events supported by Vertu are the Picnic in the Park Entertainment Contest, Brass@Beamish at Beamish Open Air Museum, and the Festival of Brass at East Durham College in Peterlee - the largest event in the Association’s calendar.
Hugh Stephenson, President of the Durham County Brass Band Association, said: “Vertu’s support will make a tangible difference to our work. These contests are essential to the future of brass band music in our region. They give bands something to aim for, they bring communities together, and they ensure standards remain high.
“Support from Vertu allows us to focus on delivering well‘run, accessible events that celebrate the very best of brass band music and encourage others to get involved.”
Vertu’s Chief Executive, Robert Forrester, has a personal connection to the movement, having played in brass bands earlier in his life, including when he first moved to the North East.
The business has a long history of backing brass band music, including its ongoing support for the Dunston Silver Band, one of the county’s most respected and successful ensembles.
Its involvement has helped bands invest in instruments, training and performances, while also raising the profile of brass banding with new audiences.
Robert Forrester, Chief Executive of Vertu, said: “Brass bands are about far more than music. They teach discipline, teamwork and pride in representing where you come from.
“I know from experience how formative that environment can be, and it is important that organisations like the Durham County Brass Band Association continue to create opportunities for people of all ages to take part.”
