Crewe Workshop Controller Beats Hundreds To Pick Up Prestigious Motor Award

A Cheshire automotive professional, who began his career 13 years ago as an apprentice, has been named as Workshop Controller of the Year at the Vertu 2024 CEO Management Awards.

James Thorley, Workshop Controller at Bristol Street Motors Ford Crewe, picked up the award in recognition of his outstanding performance and leadership after twelve and a half years with the Vertu group, the UK’s fourth largest automotive retailer.

James started his career at Crewe as an Apprentice Parts Advisor and has progressed through various roles, including Parts Supervisor, to his current position.

James has shown remarkable flexibility, consistently assisting colleagues in other departments. He has continued to drive efficiencies and keep his team motivated, resulting in both the parts and service departments’ performances achieving well above target.

The coveted CEO awards celebrate individuals who excel in their roles while embodying Vertu’s core values, setting them apart as outstanding contributors within the business. Nominations are made by the CEO Committee and senior directors, ensuring only the most deserving colleagues are recognised.

Upon receiving his award, James Thorley said: “I am incredibly honoured to receive this award. Starting as an Apprentice Parts Advisor 13 years ago, I never imagined I’d be here many years later and winning awards. It has been an amazing journey.

“The past year has been challenging, but rewarding, and the team's dedication and willingness to step up has been inspiring. Their hard work and commitment have been crucial to our success, and I am proud to lead such a resilient group.”

Robert Forrester, Chief Executive of Vertu, added: “James’s journey from Apprentice Parts Advisor to Workshop Controller is a testament to his dedication and talent. His ability to manage multiple roles and still drive exceptional results is truly commendable. Over the past year, James has shown remarkable leadership and adaptability, ensuring that the service department not only met but exceeded its targets, despite significant challenges.

“James’s strategic vision and commitment to excellence have been vital to our progress. His efforts have not only improved efficiencies but also fostered a motivated and cohesive team. I look forward to seeing the continued growth and success of the Crewe service department under his guidance.”
